Landscape
The landscapes is where I always return. At their simplest, and most engaging, they are paintings in the classic sense, an exploration of the surface and the image and that succulent tension that arises between the two. A mark is an abstraction, a smear of pigment loaded paint, and a river. But the subject of the landscape isn't a void. They are also a pursuit of that shifting interaction between the natural world and man. The furrowed lines of the farmer's field or a highway against the shape of the tree or river or mountain reveals a different world than that which we usually bicker over. But maybe that highway and the mountain are merely a pretty subject.
